Preparing for High School (2025)

Prepare for the educational challenges of high school

Suitable for children starting High School in 2025 (Year 7)

ENGLISH
Essay writing skills are extremely important in a student’s transition from Primary school into High school.

From Year 7, students will be exposed to a vast range of new terminology as they are encouraged to analyse texts, and use the language of texts, such as: ‘composer’, ‘audience’, ‘language techniques’ and ‘creating meaning’. This program will help your child become comfortable with this new terminology, as well as help them to understand and implement the newly introduced NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) ‘discursive writing’.

Students will also be given essay questions to interpret and be expected to write both short answers and long detailed essays. Workshops will focus on the TEEL method of writing essays. Full direction and practise essays will be taught using explanations and scaffolds, to ensure that each student understands and can utilise the framework for each type of question.

These will range from:

  • Review
  • Analyse
  • Create
  • Discuss

The distinction between Primary School writing and High School writing will be made and students will be able to enter secondary school confident in their writing abilities for their early years of High School. Helping your child to build a strong foundation for their ‘writing style’ prior to starting their first year of high school.

HSIE (Human Society and its Environment): the study of how humans interact with the world, how society operates and how it is changing.

A mandatory for all students (up to Year 10), your child will also be introduced to HSIE terminology, to help them integrate into a high school setting. Looking at the difference between Primary and Secondary sources and how to reference a source. Students will look at different historical events and create a timeline that reflects these historical events.
HSIE will help students develop skills to prepare them to become informed citizens and participate in the ever changing contemporary world we live in. Skills include; Critical Thinking, Communication, Information and Communications Technology, Historical and Geographical and the Understanding of society.

LIBRARY

Reading is essential in any student success throughout their years of education. Students will be taken to the ARRENDELL Education library and encouraged to borrow a book to write a review. This task will be undertaken at home, in between scheduled holiday workshop days.

MATHS
Fundamentals taught in Stage 4, Years 7 and 8 are highly beneficial, especially with the change in academic expectations of high school life – which can be overwhelming and unnecessarily confusing.

Students will be offered the opportunity to prepare for critical maths concepts taught in all years at High School. During the program, students will briefly revise core Year 6 topics, including Order of Operations, Perimeter, Area and Volume, as well as, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. Following this, and perhaps more importantly, Algebra, Negative Numbers, Geometry and Perimeter will be introduced and covered comprehensively in readiness for Term 1.
